Your New Set of Dentures Needs to Be Cleaned and Maintained

Posted .

Your new set of dentures created at Dr. Novan Nguyen’s clinic have been designed to replace the basic function and appearance of your missing teeth. While it is not vulnerable to bacterial tooth decay your dentures will still need daily cleaning and maintenance.

Many people with dentures appreciate denture adhesive for its ability to hold the dental appliance in place while also helping to block out food particles. As the day goes on the act of chewing might slightly weaken the denture adhesive allowing a few stray food particles to infiltrate the base of your dentures.

This could irritate your gums and cause your dentures to feel a little loose. In a situation like this you should thoroughly rinse the unit. Then dry the base with a clean paper towel before applying a new bead of denture adhesive.

You should also give your dentures a thorough rinse when you take the dentures out at night. This will clear away residual denture adhesive while also providing a smooth surface to reapply the denture adhesive the next day.

You should then brush all the surfaces of your dentures with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a little nonabrasive toothpaste. You can then soak your dentures overnight in water and store them in a safe place.

You might want to also brush your tongue each morning and night. This will help reduce the total bacterial load in your mouth to help keep your breath fresh.
